Overview

AI-generated overview

Reads, writes, edits and analyzes Fountain-format screenplays, with scene editing, character reports, production breakdowns and runtime estimates.

What you can do
  • Parse and load screenplays: turn Fountain text or a .fountain file into a structured AST and fetch individual scenes by number.
  • Write and edit scenes: create a new screenplay, insert, replace or delete scenes, and save changes back to disk.
  • Analyze scripts: per-character stats (scenes, dialogue count, word count) and per-scene production breakdowns of locations, characters and line counts.
  • Estimate runtime: total pages, minutes, and day/night and interior/exterior splits.
  • Export stored screenplays back to a .fountain file.
When to use it
Useful when an assistant should help draft, revise or analyze a screenplay in Fountain format — for example adding a scene at a given position, producing a character report, or checking page count and estimated runtime before a shoot or table read.
Requirements
Runs as a local process on the user's machine, installed via the npm package and started with npx or node; desktop client configuration is needed. No authentication, environment variables or headers are declared. It reads and writes .fountain files on local disk.
Before you install
Several tools write to disk: writing a new screenplay, editing, adding or removing scenes, and exporting. Scene edits replace or delete existing content and save immediately, so back up scripts and review changes before confirming. File access is limited to paths the assistant is given.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Screenplaywriter Mcp in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

README

ScreenplayWriter MCP

An MCP server for reading, writing, and analyzing screenplays in Fountain format. Parse screenplays into structured data, query character stats, generate production breakdowns, and write proper Fountain syntax.

What it does

Parse Fountain files into a queryable AST. Edit scenes while preserving formatting. Generate character reports and production breakdowns. Write new screenplays in proper industry format.

Tools

  • parse_screenplay. Parse Fountain text into a structured AST.
  • load_screenplay_file. Load a .fountain file from disk.
  • write_screenplay. Write a new screenplay in Fountain format to disk.
  • get_scene. Get a specific scene by number.
  • edit_scene. Replace a scene and save to disk.
  • add_scene. Insert a scene at a position and save to disk.
  • remove_scene. Delete a scene and save to disk.
  • character_report. Per character stats including scenes, dialogue count, and word count.
  • scene_breakdown. Production breakdown per scene with locations, characters, and line counts.
  • runtime_estimate. Total pages, minutes, day or night split, interior or exterior split.
  • export_fountain. Save stored screenplay back to a .fountain file.

Install

Claude Desktop setup

Add this to your claude_desktop_config.json:

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "screenplaywriter": {      "command": "node",      "args": ["/absolute/path/to/screenplaywriter-mcp/dist/index.js"]    }  }}

Or use npx:

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "screenplaywriter": {      "command": "npx",      "args": ["-y", "screenplaywriter-mcp"]    }  }}

Example usage

Ask Claude:

"Write a three scene screenplay about a detective who discovers the murder weapon is a keyboard"

"Parse my screenplay and give me a character report"

"How many day scenes versus night scenes do I have?"

"Add a new scene after scene 3 where the protagonist confronts the villain"

"Generate a production breakdown for my script"

"What is the estimated runtime?"

Fountain format

Fountain is a plain text format for screenwriting. Example:

FADE IN:
INT. COFFEE SHOP - DAY
JOHN (30s, tired programmer) stares at his laptop.
JOHNThis code does not work.
SARAH slides into the seat across from him.
SARAHHave you tried turning it off and on again?
FADE OUT.

The server understands all standard Fountain elements. Scene headings, character cues, dialogue, parentheticals, transitions, action lines, section headings, and notes.

Runtime estimate

The server estimates runtime based on the standard rule of 1 page equals 1 minute of screen time. Page count is calculated from action and dialogue lines.

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.
