Overview

AI-generated overview

A local stdio MCP server that scans bounded local files for secret-like patterns and returns only category counts, never values or paths.

What you can do
  • Scan local files under a configured root directory for common secret-like patterns
  • Return category counts only, with no values, keys, matches, filenames, paths or source text
  • Serve as a pre-commit review signal for spotting possible exposed credentials
When to use it
Useful when you want an assistant to check a local project for possible exposed credentials before committing, while keeping the actual secret values and file paths out of the conversation.
Requirements
Runs as a local process over stdio, installed from the npm package secret-hygiene-mcp; Node.js and npm are needed to install and start it. Scans are limited to the SECRET_HYGIENE_ROOT directory. No authentication, environment variables or headers are declared.
Before you install
Pattern matching is conservative and can produce false positives or miss unusual formats, so treat results as a review signal rather than proof. It does not return values or paths, so findings cannot be located from its output alone. Exposed credentials must be rotated separately; the server does not do that.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Secret Hygiene Mcp in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

README

secret-hygiene-mcp

Secret Hygiene scans bounded local files for common secret-like patterns and returns category counts only. It is designed as a pre-commit review signal, not a credential detector with perfect coverage.

Quick start

bash
npm installnpm testnpm start

Use scan_secret_hygiene inside SECRET_HYGIENE_ROOT.

Privacy and limits

Values, keys, matches, filenames, paths, and source text are never returned. Pattern matching is conservative and can produce false positives or miss unusual formats. Rotate exposed credentials separately.

Score

40% of the applicable checks met

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

  • Reached in the last 30 days25 pts

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.

  • Auth declared10 pts

Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.

Answer tools/list without a credential, or ship a package that starts in a sandbox without one.
