Overview

AI-generated overview

Local MCP server that lets an assistant query public USGS stream gauge data: instantaneous streamflow, daily values, gauge discovery and site metadata.

What you can do
  • Get instantaneous water observations for a gauge by parameter code, with 00060 as the common discharge parameter
  • Find active stream gauges within a longitude/latitude bounding box, with a bounded result count
  • Read site metadata for a gauge: name, county, drainage area and coordinates
  • Retrieve daily values for a gauge over a date range
  • Look up common USGS parameter codes with names and units
When to use it
Useful when you want an assistant to pull USGS streamflow and gauge information for watershed research, hydrology questions or quick checks of river conditions, without leaving the chat or handling API keys.
Requirements
Runs as a local Node.js process installed from the npm package and started via stdio; no API key, credentials or local source data are required. Network access to USGS Water Services is needed, and requests time out after 20 seconds.
Before you install
USGS data can be provisional and may later be revised, so figures should not be treated as final or authoritative. The server is read-only and requires no credentials; it sends queries to the public USGS Water Services endpoint.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Usgs Water Mcp in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

README

usgs-water-mcp

Query public USGS water observations for stream gauges and watershed research. This is separate from earthquake data and focuses on streamflow and gauge discovery.

Tools

  • get_streamflow: instantaneous observations for a gauge and USGS parameter code. 00060 is the common discharge parameter.
  • find_gauges: find active stream gauges in a min longitude, min latitude, max longitude, max latitude bounding box, with a bounded result count.

The server uses USGS Water Services without an API key. Data can be provisional and may be revised by USGS. Requests time out after 20 seconds.

Run

bash
npm installnpm run buildnode dist/index.js

Read-only stdio MCP server. No credentials or local source data are required.
