Overview

AI-generated overview

Serves retro game walkthroughs, FAQs and cheats from StrategyWiki's open MediaWiki API, letting an assistant search games and read full guide pages.

What you can do
  • Search games and guides by title
  • List a game's subpages such as walkthrough, cheats or dungeon guides
  • Fetch the full text of a guide page, with a maxChars option to truncate long walkthroughs
When to use it
Useful when you want an assistant to answer questions about older games, such as how to beat a specific dungeon or level, using community-written walkthroughs and cheat pages instead of general web search.
Requirements
Runs as a local process installed from the npm package; the README's run steps require Node.js with npm to install and build, then start the server. Network access to StrategyWiki's MediaWiki API is needed. No accounts, API keys or environment variables are declared.
Before you install
Content comes from a third-party community wiki, so accuracy and completeness are not guaranteed and guide text can be long. The server only reads public wiki pages; no credentials or write actions are declared.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Walkthrough Mcp in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

README

walkthrough mcp

Retro game walkthroughs, FAQs, and cheats from StrategyWiki's open MediaWiki API.

Originally built against GameFAQs, GameFAQs (Fandom) blocks all non browser clients with a Cloudflare bot wall and has no Wayback snapshots, so the server sources the same kind of content from StrategyWiki, which has a real, open API.

Tools

  • search_games, find games/guides by title
  • get_game_pages, list a game's subpages (Walkthrough, Cheats, dungeon guides...)
  • get_guide, full page text (walkthroughs are big; truncate via maxChars)

Run

bash
npm install && npm run build && node dist/index.js

Example

"How do I beat the Water Temple?" search_games("Ocarina of Time") → get_guide("The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time/Water Temple")

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.
