Overview

AI-generated overview

An MCP server that lets an AI assistant create, read, update, list, search, star and delete GitHub Gists from the IDE.

What you can do
List your gists and your starred gists, with pagination and search by ID or content. Read a gist by ID, including its file contents. Create a new public or secret gist from a code snippet. Update a gist's description or file contents. Star, unstar or delete gists.
When to use it
Useful when you want to save code snippets as gists, look up existing gists, or manage gist metadata without leaving Claude Desktop, Cursor or VS Code Copilot. It complements a general GitHub server that covers repos and issues but not gists.
Requirements
Runs locally via npx (Node.js). Needs a GitHub personal access token with the gist scope, set as the GITHUB_TOKEN or GITHUB_PERSONAL_ACCESS_TOKEN environment variable, and network access to GitHub.
Before you install
Requires a GitHub personal access token with the gist scope, passed as GITHUB_TOKEN or GITHUB_PERSONAL_ACCESS_TOKEN; treat it as a secret. The assistant can create, update, star and delete gists, and gists may be public, so review content before it is published.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Github Gist in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

MCP Server GitHub Gist — Manage Gists from Your AI Assistant

[npm version] [npm downloads] [CI] [License: MIT]

An MCP server to create, read, update, and search GitHub Gists without leaving your AI assistant. The official GitHub MCP server handles repos and issues — this one fills the Gist gap.

You: "Save this code snippet as a gist called 'auth-middleware.ts'"AI: ✅ Created secret gist: https://gist.github.com/abc123

Works with Claude Desktop, Cursor, and VS Code Copilot.

Score

50% of the applicable checks met

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

  • Reached in the last 30 days25 pts

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.

  • Auth declared10 pts

Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.

  • Tools listed15 pts

Answer tools/list without a credential, or ship a package that starts in a sandbox without one.
