Overview

AI-generated overview

Baton is a local MCP server that lets an assistant plan a task DAG and route each task to the best capable model across several AI providers.

What you can do
Plan a task as a directed acyclic graph of subtasks and route each subtask to the model best suited to it, per the registry description. Use a Claude Code subscription CLI as a provider when enabled. Use a Codex CLI as a provider when enabled. Use an Anthropic API key or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint as a provider. No individual tools are listed in the manifest, so exact operations are not documented here.
When to use it
Worth adding when you want an assistant to break a larger job into dependent subtasks and spread them across different models or providers rather than relying on a single model. Suited to users who already have Claude Code, Codex, or an OpenAI-compatible endpoint available.
Requirements
Runs locally over stdio, launched with uvx from the baton-orchestrator PyPI package, so a Python/uv runtime is needed. Desktop only. At least one provider must be configured: ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, CLAUDE_CODE_ENABLED=1 for the Claude Code CLI, CODEX_ENABLED=1 for the Codex CLI, or OPENAI_COMPAT_BASE_URL for an OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
Before you install
ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is a card-billed Anthropic API key, so usage can cost money. Enabling the Claude Code or Codex CLI providers runs your existing subscription CLIs on your machine. OPENAI_COMPAT_BASE_URL sends task content to whichever third-party endpoint you point it at. No authentication is declared for the server itself.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Baton in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

Score

25% of the applicable checks met

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

  • Reached in the last 30 days25 pts

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.

  • Auth declared10 pts

Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.

  • Tools listed15 pts

Answer tools/list without a credential, or ship a package that starts in a sandbox without one.

Declare a GitHub repository with a README, or serve resource_documentation in the OAuth protected-resource metadata.

Declare a license in the repository or the registry entry.
