SQL formatting, schema visualization, migration generation
Overview
Local MCP server that gives an assistant SQL text tools: formatting, plain-English explanation, schema analysis, query building and migration generation.
- What you can do
- Format and prettify SQL queries for MySQL, PostgreSQL and SQLite
- Explain a query in plain English, listing tables, columns, conditions and optimization tips
- Parse CREATE TABLE statements into tables, columns, constraints, keys and indexes, and draw an ER diagram in Mermaid
- Build SQL from natural-language descriptions, including filters, aggregation, joins, ordering and pagination
- Compare old and new schemas and generate up and down ALTER TABLE migrations
- When to use it
- Useful when you work with SQL as text and want help tidying queries, understanding unfamiliar SQL, documenting a schema, drafting queries from a description, or producing migration statements between two schema versions, without connecting to a live database.
- Requirements
- Runs as a local Node.js process installed from the npm package; the README describes installing dependencies, building, and pointing a desktop client at the built entry file. No database connection, account, API key or environment variable is declared.
Installation
In SourceWeft
- Open Database in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
- Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.
Other MCP clients
Follow the launch instructions in the repository.
README
mcp-database-tools
MCP server providing SQL and database tools for AI agents. All analysis is performed on SQL text — no actual database connection required.
Tools
sql_format
Format and prettify SQL queries with proper indentation, uppercased keywords, and aligned columns. Supports MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQLite syntax.
sql_explain
Take a SQL query and explain what it does in plain English, step by step. Identifies query type, tables, columns, conditions, and provides optimization tips.
schema_analyze
Parse CREATE TABLE statements to extract tables, columns, types, constraints, foreign keys, and indexes. Generates an ER diagram in Mermaid format.
query_build
Build SQL queries from natural language descriptions. Supports common patterns like filtering by date, aggregation, joins, ordering, and pagination.
migration_generate
Compare two schemas (old vs new CREATE TABLE statements) and generate ALTER TABLE migration statements. Produces both up (forward) and down (rollback) migrations.

Score
50% of the applicable checks met
How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.
- Reached in the last 30 days25 pts
Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.
- Auth declared10 pts
Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.

Answer tools/list without a credential, or ship a package that starts in a sandbox without one.
