Dir tree, file stats, duplicates, LOC for AI agents
Overview
Lets an assistant inspect local directories: directory trees, file statistics, duplicate detection, line-of-code counts, and file search.
- What you can do
- This local MCP server exposes five read-only analysis tools for file systems. dir_tree renders a visual directory tree with configurable depth and ignore patterns; file_stats summarizes a directory with totals, size breakdown by extension, and largest, newest, and oldest files. duplicate_finder groups duplicates by size and MD5 hash and reports wasted space, code_counter counts code, comment, and blank lines across 20+ languages, and file_search matches files by name glob, content regex, size, and modification date.
- When to use it
- Useful when an assistant needs to understand a codebase or folder layout, audit disk usage, find duplicated files, measure project size by language, or locate files by name, content, or date without manual shell commands.
- Requirements
- Runs locally over stdio as an npm package (@rog0x/mcp-file-tools) and needs Node.js; the README describes cloning the repository, running npm install and npm run build, then registering the built dist/index.js with an absolute path in the client configuration. Desktop only; no authentication, environment variables, or headers are declared.
Installation
In SourceWeft
- Open File in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
- Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.
Other MCP clients
Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

Score
50% of the applicable checks met
How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.
- Reached in the last 30 days25 pts
Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.
- Auth declared10 pts
Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.
