DNS, IP info, SSL, WHOIS, ping for AI agents

Overview

AI-generated overview

A local MCP server that gives an AI assistant network diagnostics: DNS lookups, IP geolocation, SSL certificate checks, WHOIS and HTTP latency tests.

What you can do
Resolve domains to DNS records, run reverse DNS and check propagation across public DNS servers.Look up IP geolocation and network details such as country, city, ISP, ASN and coordinates for IPv4 and IPv6. Inspect SSL/TLS certificates for validity, issuer, expiry, SANs, chain, cipher and protocol. Retrieve WHOIS registration data for a domain. Measure HTTP response time over several requests and report average, min, max, p95 latency and success rate.
When to use it
Useful when troubleshooting domain, DNS, certificate or connectivity problems, or when an assistant needs quick lookup of who owns a domain, where an IP is located, or how fast an endpoint responds.
Requirements
Runs as a local Node.js process installed from the npm package and started via node, typically configured in the desktop client's config file. No API keys or environment variables are declared. Network access is required, and IP geolocation relies on the free ip-api.com service.
Before you install
Lookups send the queried domains, IP addresses and URLs to outside services, including public DNS servers and ip-api.com, so internal or sensitive hostnames become visible to third parties. The tools are read-only diagnostics and do not modify data.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Network in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

README

mcp-network-tools

Network diagnostics tools for AI agents, exposed via the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

Tools

ToolDescription
dns_lookupResolve domains to DNS records (A, AAAA, MX, TXT, NS, CNAME, SOA). Reverse DNS. Propagation check across public DNS servers.
ip_infoGeolocation and network info for an IP address — country, city, ISP, ASN, coordinates. IPv4 and IPv6.
ssl_checkInspect SSL/TLS certificates — validity, issuer, expiry, SANs, certificate chain, cipher, protocol.
whois_lookupWHOIS data for a domain — registrar, creation/expiry dates, nameservers, status.
http_pingMeasure HTTP response time over N requests. Returns avg, min, max, p95 latency and success rate.

Setup

bash
npm installnpm run build

Usage with Claude Desktop

Add to your claude_desktop_config.json:

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "network-tools": {      "command": "node",      "args": ["D:/products/mcp-servers/mcp-network-tools/dist/index.js"]    }  }}

Dependencies

  • @modelcontextprotocol/sdk — MCP server framework
  • Node.js built-in modules — dns, tls, net, https, http (no external runtime dependencies beyond MCP SDK)
  • ip-api.com — free geolocation API (no API key required)

Examples

DNS Lookup

dns_lookup({ domain: "example.com", record_types: ["A", "MX"] })

Score

40% of the applicable checks met

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

  • Reached in the last 30 days25 pts

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.

  • Auth declared10 pts

Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.

  • Tools listed15 pts

Answer tools/list without a credential, or ship a package that starts in a sandbox without one.
