Overview

AI-generated overview

Turns a local JSON file into read-only MCP tools for listing, keyword searching and fetching records by id.

What it does
This local stdio server reads a single JSON file and exposes three read-only tools named after a prefix you choose: a list tool with limit and offset paging, a case-insensitive keyword search where every word must match, and a get tool that returns one record by its id field. You point it at the file, optionally a dot path to the array inside it, the id field and the fields to search. It is aimed at catalogues, FAQs, price lists and docs indexes.
When to use it
Use it when you have a small, static JSON dataset you want an assistant to browse and search without writing custom code, for example a product catalogue, FAQ or documentation index. It suits local desktop clients such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code or Cursor over stdio.
Requirements
Runs locally as a stdio process and needs Node.js 20 or newer. It is installed from a packaged release or by cloning the repository and running npm install. You must supply the JSON file path and optionally the array path, tool name prefix, id field and search fields. No accounts, API keys or environment variables are declared.
Before you install
The tools are read-only, so the server does not modify your data. It reads whatever JSON file path you give it, so point it only at files you are comfortable exposing to the assistant. The README mentions a paid companion product, MCP Server Kit, which is separate from this free server.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open JSON MCP Lite in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

README

json-mcp-lite

Turn a JSON file into an MCP server in one command, so Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor or any stdio MCP client can browse and search your data.

Give it a catalogue, an FAQ, a price list or a docs index, and it creates three read-only tools:

ToolWhat it does
<name>_listList records, with limit / offset paging
<name>_searchKeyword search; every word must match, case-insensitive
<name>_getOne record by its id field

MIT licence. Node.js 20+. Two dependencies: the official @modelcontextprotocol/sdk and zod.

Try it

bash
git clone https://github.com/scoretracker4321/json-mcp-litecd json-mcp-lite && npm installnpm start # serves examples/products.json on stdionpm test

Use it with Claude Desktop or Cursor

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "products": {      "command": "node",      "args": [        "/abs/path/json-mcp-lite/src/server.js",        "--file", "/abs/path/products.json",        "--name", "products",        "--id", "sku",        "--search", "title,description"      ]    }  }}

Claude Code:

bash
claude mcp add products -- node /abs/path/json-mcp-lite/src/server.js --file /abs/path/products.json --name products --id sku

Then ask: "Which teas are under ₹400 and in stock?" or "Show me product MUG-001."

Options

FlagDefaultMeaning

Need more than a JSON file?

json-mcp-lite is the free, local, single-file part of MCP Server Kit ($29, one-time). The Kit adds:

  • Any REST API → MCP tools from its OpenAPI 3 spec: one typed tool per operation, auth injected from env, read-only filter, include/exclude lists
  • Remote hosting over Streamable HTTP (stateless, proxy-friendly), not only stdio
  • API-key auth and per-key rate limits, CORS, /health and /tools endpoints
  • Several sources in one server, set up in one YAML/JSON config file
  • Docker image, an Express router to mount inside your own app, and deploy guides
