Overview

AI-generated overview

SharedMemory's local MCP server gives an assistant persistent memory: it stores facts, recalls them by semantic search, and explores a shared knowledge graph.

What you can do
Store single or batched memories, update or delete them by ID, and submit relevance feedback on results. Retrieve context before answering through semantic search, fetch specific memories, and get a prompt-ready context block or auto-generated user profile. Search entities by name, read entity details and relationships, and view the knowledge graph overview. List accessible volumes, uploaded documents, and active instructions, and set persistent rules all agents follow. Use the knowledge-graph resource and prompts that summarize a volume or report what is known about a topic.
When to use it
Useful when you want an assistant to carry knowledge across sessions and clients, such as coding agents that should remember project facts, preferences, or team rules. Also fits teams sharing one memory volume across Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code Copilot, or Windsurf.
Requirements
Runs locally as an npm package via npx, so Node.js is needed. Requires a SharedMemory API key in SHAREDMEMORY_API_KEY; optional SHAREDMEMORY_API_URL and SHAREDMEMORY_VOLUME_ID set the endpoint and default volume. Network access to the SharedMemory API is required.
Before you install
The API key in SHAREDMEMORY_API_KEY is a live credential; keep it out of shared config files and prefer environment-variable references. The assistant can write, update, and delete memories and set instructions that all agents in a volume follow, so review such changes. Stored memories and queries are sent to the SharedMemory cloud service.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Memory in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

README

@sharedmemory/mcp-server

Model Context Protocol server for SharedMemory. Gives Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code Copilot, and other MCP-compatible tools persistent memory.

Quick Install (Recommended)

The fastest way to set up SharedMemory — one command, no JSON editing:

bash
# Interactive — picks your client, asks for your API keynpx -y @sharedmemory/mcp-server install
# Or specify everything inlinenpx -y @sharedmemory/mcp-server install --cursor --api-key sm_live_... --volume your-volume-id
# Install for all supported clients at oncenpx -y @sharedmemory/mcp-server install --all --api-key sm_live_...

Supported clients: --claude-code, --claude, --cursor, --vscode, --windsurf, --all

Manual Setup

If you prefer to edit config files yourself:

Claude Code

One command:

bash
claude mcp add sharedmemory -- npx -y @sharedmemory/mcp-server

Or with env vars:

bash
claude mcp add --env SHAREDMEMORY_API_KEY=sm_live_... \  --env SHAREDMEMORY_VOLUME_ID=your-volume-id \  sharedmemory -- npx -y @sharedmemory/mcp-server

Or create .mcp.json in your project root to share with your team:

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "sharedmemory": {      "command": "npx",      "args": ["-y", "@sharedmemory/mcp-server"],      "env": {        "SHAREDMEMORY_API_KEY": "${SHAREDMEMORY_API_KEY}",        "SHAREDMEMORY_API_URL": "https://api.sharedmemory.ai",        "SHAREDMEMORY_VOLUME_ID": "${SHAREDMEMORY_VOLUME_ID}"      }    }  }}

Tip: Copy the included CLAUDE.md into your project root to teach Claude Code when and how to use SharedMemory proactively.

Claude Desktop

~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json:

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "sharedmemory": {      "command": "npx",      "args": ["-y", "@sharedmemory/mcp-server"],      "env": {        "SHAREDMEMORY_API_KEY": "sm_live_...",        "SHAREDMEMORY_API_URL": "https://api.sharedmemory.ai",        "SHAREDMEMORY_VOLUME_ID": "your-volume-id"      }    }  }}

Cursor

.cursor/mcp.json in your project root:

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "sharedmemory": {      "command": "npx",      "args": ["-y", "@sharedmemory/mcp-server"],      "env": {        "SHAREDMEMORY_API_KEY": "sm_live_...",        "SHAREDMEMORY_API_URL": "https://api.sharedmemory.ai",        "SHAREDMEMORY_VOLUME_ID": "your-volume-id"      }    }  }}

VS Code Copilot

.vscode/mcp.json:

json
{  "servers": {    "sharedmemory": {      "command": "npx",      "args": ["-y", "@sharedmemory/mcp-server"],      "env": {        "SHAREDMEMORY_API_KEY": "sm_live_...",        "SHAREDMEMORY_API_URL": "https://api.sharedmemory.ai",        "SHAREDMEMORY_VOLUME_ID": "your-volume-id"      }    }  }}

Windsurf

~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json:

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "sharedmemory": {      "command": "npx",      "args": ["-y", "@sharedmemory/mcp-server"],      "env": {        "SHAREDMEMORY_API_KEY": "sm_live_...",        "SHAREDMEMORY_API_URL": "https://api.sharedmemory.ai",        "SHAREDMEMORY_VOLUME_ID": "your-volume-id"      }    }  }}

Score

50% of the applicable checks met

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

  • Reached in the last 30 days25 pts

    Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.

  • Auth declared10 pts

    Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.
