Overview
Local-first codebase intelligence MCP server that lets an assistant chat about, search, audit and safely patch a repository with file-and-line citations.
- What you can do
- Ask questions about a repository and get answers cited by file and line, in English or French, with search, explain and intelligence tools for understanding code. Run deterministic health, impact, check, doctor, stats, history, baseline and deep audit analysis, including circular dependencies, complexity hotspots and secrets. Generate refactor, task and fix suggestions, and apply patches with dry-run, backups and protected paths. Produce reports and a local dashboard, and gate changes in CI with a strict check.
- When to use it
- Useful when you want an assistant to reason over an entire local repository rather than pasted files, with verifiable citations. Suited to code review, refactoring planning, dependency and complexity audits, and CI checks on changed files. Works well when code must stay on the machine.
- Requirements
- Runs as a local Node.js process via npx codebase-chat-mcp, with a setup wizard that writes client configuration. No API key is required in prompt-only mode; optional DEEPSEEK_API_KEY or OPENAI_API_KEY enable direct model calls, with optional base URL and model variables. Index cache location can be set with CODEBASE_CACHE_DIR.
Installation
In SourceWeft
- Open Codebase Chat in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
- Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.
