Comment Scraper

Read your Comment Scraper exports of Reddit and Hacker News threads. Local and read-only.

Overview

AI-generated overview

Reads your local Comment Scraper JSON exports of Reddit and Hacker News threads so an assistant can list, read, search and cite comments.

What you can do
  • List exported Reddit and Hacker News threads, newest first, with comment counts
  • Read a thread as numbered Markdown, paged 200 comments at a time, optionally filtered by score
  • Search comments containing all given words across all exports or one thread, highest score first
  • Fetch a single comment with the comments it replies to and its direct replies
When to use it
Useful when you have exported Reddit or Hacker News threads with the Comment Scraper browser extension and want an assistant to summarize, search or quote them without pasting the text in. Comment numbers match the extension's Markdown export, so citations can be traced back to the file.
Requirements
Runs locally via npx (Node.js 20 or newer) as a stdio server. Needs the Comment Scraper browser extension and JSON exports (one row per comment or nested replies); CSV and Markdown files are not read. Reads the Downloads folder and its direct subfolders by default; other folders are set with the COMMENT_SCRAPER_DIRS environment variable or a --dir argument. No network access or authentication.
Before you install
Read-only and offline: it does not write, move or delete files. The comments the assistant reads are sent to your model provider under their terms. Exports are said not to contain usernames, but thread content may still be sensitive. Do not install both the plugin and the manual add, or tools appear twice.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Comment Scraper in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

README

comment-scraper-mcp

Ask Claude about the Reddit and Hacker News threads you exported with Comment Scraper, without pasting them in.

This is a small MCP server. It reads the JSON files the Comment Scraper browser extension saves to your Downloads folder and gives Claude (or any MCP client) four tools to list, read and search them. Comments keep the same numbers as the extension's Markdown export, like [c12], so when Claude quotes a comment you can find it in the file.

It runs on your computer, only reads files, and makes no network requests.

Before you start

  1. Install the Comment Scraper extension from the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Export a thread and pick JSON, one row per comment or JSON, replies nested. CSV and Markdown files aren't read.
  3. Have Node.js 20 or newer.

Install

Claude Code

sh
claude mcp add comment-scraper -- npx -y comment-scraper-mcp

Claude Desktop: open Settings → Developer → Edit Config and add:

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "comment-scraper": {      "command": "npx",      "args": ["-y", "comment-scraper-mcp"]    }  }}

Restart Claude Desktop afterwards. Other MCP clients (Cursor, Windsurf and so on) take the same command: npx -y comment-scraper-mcp.

As a Claude Code plugin: the plugin folder bundles the server, pinned to a release, with a skill that tells Claude how to cite comments. This repository doubles as a plugin marketplace:

sh
claude plugin install comment-scraper --marketplace supertj/comment-scraper-mcp

Use the plugin or claude mcp add, not both, or Claude sees every tool twice.

As a Hermes Agent plugin: the same folder works in Hermes Agent. The install steps are in the plugin README.

Pi: this package is also a Pi package. Installing it gives Pi the server and the same skill the Claude plugin uses:

sh
pi install npm:comment-scraper-mcp

Start a new Pi session and ask about your exports. Pi starts the server from the installed package, so nothing is downloaded at run time, and /mcp shows whether it connected. You need Pi 0.99 or newer, the first version with MCP support. To read another folder, set COMMENT_SCRAPER_DIRS in the shell you start Pi from. If you already added comment-scraper-mcp to Pi's mcp.json by hand, remove that entry, unless it's named comment-scraper, in which case Pi uses it in place of the package's.

Where it looks

By default it reads your Downloads folder and the folders directly inside it, so moving exports into a project folder there is fine. To read somewhere else, pass one or more folders:

sh
claude mcp add comment-scraper -- npx -y comment-scraper-mcp --dir ~/Research/reddit

or set COMMENT_SCRAPER_DIRS (folders separated by :, or ; on Windows). Files are recognised by their content, so renaming them is fine. If you export the same thread twice, the newest export is used.

Tools

ToolWhat it does
list_threadsYour exported threads, newest first, with how many comments were fetched and how many the site reports
read_threadA thread as numbered Markdown, 200 comments at a time, optionally only comments above a score
search_commentsComments containing all of your words, across every export or one thread, highest score first
get_commentOne comment with the replies it answers and the replies to it

Things to ask

  • "List my exported threads."
  • "Read the CRM thread and group the complaints about pricing. Cite comment numbers."
  • "Search my exports for 'switched from' and summarise what people moved to."
  • "Show c41 in context."

Privacy

The server reads JSON files in the folders above and nothing else. It doesn't write, move or delete files, and it doesn't connect to the internet. What you ask Claude, and the comments Claude reads through these tools, go to Anthropic or whichever model provider your client uses, under their terms. Exports from the extension don't contain usernames.
