A remote MCP server that builds literature lists and citation networks from Crossref records, with citation counts, open-access links and exportable…
What you can do
Search Crossref for papers on a topic by relevance, with optional year range, minimum citation count and open-access filters, returning citation counts, open-access links and a bibliography file.
Explore a paper's citation network from its DOI, listing its most-cited references for backward snowballing.
Format a list of DOIs into APA, MLA, Chicago author-date or IEEE reference lists, plus BibTeX and RIS files for reference managers.
When to use it
Useful when writing a student paper, thesis or research project and you want a real, citable reading list rather than generated references, or when you need to snowball from one known paper to its key references.
Requirements
A remote streamable HTTP endpoint; no package, account, API key or environment variable is declared. Network access to the endpoint and to Crossref data is needed.
Before you install
Results depend on Crossref, so the list of works citing a paper is not available and coverage is limited to what Crossref holds. Bibliography files are written for export to tools such as Zotero, EndNote or Mendeley; check the output before submitting it as a reference list.
Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.
Use with an agent
Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.
Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/io.github.theluckystrike%2Fpaper-finder/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.
Use this when the user wants a literature list or reading list on a research topic with real citation counts, open-access links and a bibliography file (BibTeX, RIS, CSV, PDF). Searches Crossref publisher records by relevance with optional year range, minimum citations, open-access filter (Unpaywall) and sort. Returns up to 30 works per call. Does not summarize papers, read full text or judge study quality. Do not use for a single known paper (use get_paper_network) or for formatting known DOIs (use format_bibliography).
Use this when the user has one paper (DOI) and wants its most-cited references and its citation count, for backward snowballing of a literature search, with BibTeX, RIS, CSV and PDF files. Data comes from Crossref; the list of works that cite the paper is not available from Crossref, and the result says so. Does not accept titles or search by topic (use find_papers) and does not read full text.

Use this when the user has a list of DOIs and wants a reference list in APA, MLA, Chicago (author-date) or IEEE style plus BibTeX and RIS files that import into Zotero, EndNote or Mendeley. Metadata comes from Crossref, so references are real publisher records, not generated text. Up to 50 DOIs per call. Does not accept titles, URLs of web pages or citation text, and does not check a manuscript.

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.
