MCP server for Godot game engine integration — control the Godot editor with AI

VerifiedSTDIODesktop onlyDeveloper ToolsMedia & Design

Overview

AI-generated overview

Connects an AI assistant to a running Godot 4.4+ editor so it can read and edit scenes, scripts, nodes and project settings.

What you can do
  • Browse project files, read files, search the project and create scripts
  • Create scenes and add, remove, move or configure nodes, attach scripts, assign collision shapes and textures
  • Apply code edits, validate script syntax, and rename or move files with reference updates
  • Read project settings, input map, collision layers, console errors and scene tree dumps
  • Generate 2D sprites from SVG and open an interactive browser-based project map
When to use it
Useful when building or debugging a Godot game project and you want the assistant to work directly in the editor instead of copy-pasting code and scene data. Best for script writing, scene assembly and project inspection rather than generating a whole game unaided.
Requirements
Runs locally as a Node.js process started via npx (Node.js must be installed). Requires Godot 4.4+ with the Godot MCP plugin copied into the project's addons folder and enabled, then the project restarted. The server talks to the editor over WebSocket on port 6505 and serves the visualizer on localhost:6510.
Before you install
The assistant writes to project files on disk, and Godot's native Ctrl+Z does not revert those changes; an mcp_undo tool must be used instead. It is local-only and handles one editor instance at a time, and the assistant's Godot knowledge is limited, so review edits before relying on them.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Godot Mcp in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

README

Godot MCP Server

Give your AI assistant full access to the Godot editor.

Build games faster with Claude, Cursor, or any MCP-compatible AI — no copy-pasting, no context switching. The AI reads, writes, and manipulates your scenes, scripts, nodes, and project settings directly inside the running Godot editor.

Quick Start

0. Install Node.js (one-time setup)

Download and run the installer from nodejs.org (LTS version). It's a standard installer — no terminal needed.

1. Install the Godot plugin

No cloning or building required — runs directly via npx.

Claude Desktop — edit ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json:

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "godot": {      "command": "npx",      "args": ["-y", "godot-mcp-server"]    }  }}

Cursor — add to MCP settings (Settings → MCP → Add Server):

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "godot": {      "command": "npx",      "args": ["-y", "godot-mcp-server"]    }  }}

Works with any MCP-compatible client (Claude Code, Cline, Windsurf, etc.)

2. Install the Godot plugin

Copy the addons/godot_mcp/ folder from the GitHub repo into your Godot project's addons/ directory. Then enable it: Project → Project Settings → Plugins → Godot MCP → Enable.

Or install it from inside the Godot editor: the Asset Store tab (Godot 4.7+, search "Godlink MCP") or the AssetLib tab (Godot 4.6 and older, search "mcp") → Install.

3. Connect

Restart your Godot project. Check the top-right corner of the editor — you should see MCP: Agent Active in green. You're ready to go.

Interactive Visualizer

Run map_project and get a browser-based project explorer at localhost:6510:

  • Force-directed graph of all scripts and their relationships
  • Click any script to see variables, functions, signals, and connections
  • Edit code directly in the visualizer — changes sync to Godot in real time
  • Scene view with node property editing
  • Find usages before refactoring

The MCP server connects to the Godot editor via WebSocket through the Godot plugin. The AI never guesses at your project structure — it reads live state directly from the running editor.

Current Limitations

  • Local only — runs on localhost, no remote connections
  • One Godot editor at a time — multiple AI clients can connect concurrently, but they all share a single Godot instance
  • Ctrl+Z does not reach AI changes — the plugin writes to disk rather than the editor's live tree, so Godot's native undo has nothing to revert. Use the mcp_undo tool instead (ask the agent to undo).
  • AI has limited Godot knowledge — it can help debug, write scripts, and build scenes, but can't create a complete game without guidance

Build From Source

bash
git clone https://github.com/tomyud1/godot-mcpcd godot-mcp/mcp-servernpm installnpm run build

Then point your AI client at mcp-server/dist/index.js instead of using npx.

50% of the applicable checks met

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.
