Patent search and prior art discovery via Google Patents on BigQuery

Overview

AI-generated overview

A local MCP server that lets an assistant search Google Patents data on BigQuery, fetch patent details and read claims for prior art research.

What you can do
Search patents by keyword, technology area or inventor name using the Google Patents public dataset on BigQuery. Fetch full patent details by publication number. Retrieve the claims text of a given patent. Supports prior art discovery and inventor or company-focused patent lookups.
When to use it
Useful when you want an assistant to help with patent research: finding patents on a technology, checking prior art before filing, or looking up what a company or inventor has patented.
Requirements
Runs as a local process built from source with Go 1.21 or later. Needs a Google Cloud account with the BigQuery API enabled, a service account with BigQuery Job User and BigQuery Data Viewer roles, and its JSON key. Set GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS to the key file path and GCP_PROJECT_ID to the project; DEBUG is optional. Network access to BigQuery is required.
Before you install
Requires a Google Cloud service account JSON key, referenced by GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS; keep it private and scope it to the two read-only BigQuery roles. Queries run against your GCP project and count toward BigQuery usage, though the public dataset offers a free monthly tier. Patent queries and results are sent to Google BigQuery.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Patents Mcp in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

patents-mcp

[Go Version] [License: MIT] [tushariitr-19/patents-mcp MCP server]

An MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for patent search and prior art discovery, powered by the Google Patents public dataset on BigQuery.

Built with the official Go MCP SDK.

Why patents-mcp?

Existing patent MCP servers are either paid, single-source, or unmaintained. patents-mcp is:

  • Free — built on Google Patents public dataset (1TB/month free on BigQuery)
  • Open source — MIT licensed
  • Production grade — structured logging, graceful shutdown, clean architecture
  • Extensible — each tool is self-contained, easy to add new tools

Prerequisites

  • Go 1.21+
  • A Google Cloud account (free)
  • BigQuery API enabled on your GCP project

Setup

1. Google Cloud Setup

  1. Create a GCP project at console.cloud.google.com
  2. Enable the BigQuery API
  3. Create a service account with the following roles:
    • BigQuery Job User
    • BigQuery Data Viewer
  4. Download the service account JSON key

2. Install

bash
git clone https://github.com/tushariitr-19/patents-mcpcd patents-mcpgo build -o patents-mcp-server ./cmd/server/

3. Configure

bash
export GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS="/path/to/service-account.json"export GCP_PROJECT_ID="your-gcp-project-id"
# Optional: enable debug loggingexport DEBUG=true

Usage with Claude Desktop

Add to your Claude Desktop config (claude_desktop_config.json):

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "patents-mcp": {      "command": "/path/to/patents-mcp-server",      "env": {        "GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS": "/path/to/service-account.json",        "GCP_PROJECT_ID": "your-gcp-project-id"      }    }  }}

  • "Find prior art for context-aware UI element hiding"
  • "What patents has Google filed related to quantum computing?"
  • "Find patents by inventor Yann LeCun"

Each tool owns its own dependencies — the server is agnostic of what tools do internally. Adding a new tool is a single line in server/server.go.

Contributing

PRs welcome. To add a new tool:

  1. Create tools/<toolname>.go
  2. Define your input struct and tool definition
  3. Register it in server/server.go with one line

Score

50% of the applicable checks met

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

  • Reached in the last 30 days25 pts

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.

  • Auth declared10 pts

Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.
