Generate production-ready Tableau workbooks (.twb / .twbx) from natural language and a CSV.
Overview
Generates Tableau workbooks (.twb/.twbx) from a CSV and a natural-language prompt, with dataset profiling, templates, previews and publishing.
- What you can do
- Profile a CSV to get schema, data types, cardinality and null counts
- Generate a Tableau workbook or packaged workbook from a CSV path and a prompt
- List available dashboard templates such as sales, OEE, finance and marketing
- Render a thumbnail preview of a generated workbook
- Publish a generated workbook to Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server
- When to use it
- Useful when you have a CSV and want an editable Tableau workbook built quickly instead of assembling worksheets and dashboards by hand, or when you want to publish such a workbook to Tableau Cloud or Server from the assistant.
- Requirements
- Runs locally over stdio via npx (Node.js) or a global npm install. No authentication or environment variables are declared. It reads CSV files from local paths and writes workbook files to paths you specify; publishing to Tableau Cloud or Server requires a reachable Tableau instance.
Installation
In SourceWeft
- Open Tableaugen Mcp in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
- Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.
Other MCP clients
Follow the launch instructions in the repository.
README
TabGen MCP Server
Generate production-ready Tableau workbooks from natural language and a CSV.
Official MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for TabGen — the AI-powered Tableau workbook generator. Turn a CSV plus a one-line prompt into a real .twb / .twbx file that opens directly in Tableau Desktop or publishes to Tableau Cloud.
What it does
TabGen writes to Tableau. Point it at a dataset, describe the dashboard you want, and get back an actual editable workbook — not a screenshot, not a suggestion, not a code snippet. The generated file has real data connections, calculated fields, worksheets, dashboard containers, and filter actions wired together.
Use it directly from Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, or any MCP-compatible client.
Installation

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.

Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.
