Generate changelogs and suggest semver bumps from git history
Overview
Generates changelogs and suggests semver version bumps from a local git repository's commit history.
- What you can do
- Exposes two tools: changelogai_generate, which reads git history between refs and returns a changelog in markdown, JSON, or plain text, optionally grouped by conventional-commit type; and changelogai_version_bump, which analyzes commits and suggests a major, minor, or patch bump. An optional AI mode rewrites technical commit messages into user-facing release notes. Output can be written to a file or prepended to an existing CHANGELOG.md.
- When to use it
- Useful when preparing releases and you want an assistant to draft release notes or recommend a version bump from commit history. Fits projects that follow conventional commits and want changelog generation inside an IDE or agent workflow.
- Requirements
- Runs locally as a Node.js process, typically via npx with the @ura-dev/changelogai package; the manifest declares no authentication and no environment variables. It needs access to a local git repository. AI mode additionally requires an Anthropic API key set as ANTHROPIC_API_KEY.
Installation
In SourceWeft
- Open changelogai in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
- Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.
Other MCP clients
Follow the launch instructions in the repository.
