Aircraft coverage and identification are incomplete, and earliness figures are not alert publication times or proof of a lead over emergency services. Data is CC BY 4.0 and requires attribution to kanari.io with a link.

Installation

kanari — early wildfire detection, worldwide, free

kanari is a free, independent, near real-time world map of wildfire ignitions. It fuses satellite fire detections — NASA FIRMS (VIIRS 375 m), NOAA GOES and EUMETSAT Meteosat MTG (10-minute refresh) — with citizen reports verified twice by AI, tracks firefighting aircraft live (ADS-B), and archives every significant fire as a permanent page. Goal: surface fire starts as early as possible, often before the media. Available in French, English, Spanish and Portuguese.

How it works (short version)

  1. Satellite hotspots from NASA FIRMS, GOES and Meteosat MTG are clustered into fire events (≈4 km cells); the first detection is the proxy for ignition time.
  2. Public witness reports (Bluesky, press via GDELT, Telegram) are geoparsed and assessed twice by independent AI models before being attached to an event (possible → probable → corrobore).
  3. Significant events (corroborated, or above detection/power thresholds) are archived with a permanent page; aggregates feed the daily reports, the observatory and the API.
  4. Firefighting aircraft are identified from ADS-B (registration, ICAO type) and shown live.

Archive, witness signals and aircraft need Supabase and a few provider keys; every page degrades gracefully without them (the CI builds and runs the SEO guard with no secrets).

Fire clusters detected by satellite over the last N hours (default 24), worldwide or filtered by ISO-2 country, bounding box, or a point with a radius. Returns up to `limit` clusters ranked by relevance (corroborated and recent first). Use for 'is there a fire near X right now' or 'wildfires in <country> today'. Each cluster: position, first/last satellite pass (UTC), detections per sensor, peak fire radiative power (MW), confidence (possible | probable | corrobore = cross-checked with witnesses).
