U.S. public-records: business registration (KYB), filings, watchlist screening, federal awards.
Overview
Lets an assistant look up U.S. public records: business registrations, new filings, federal watchlist screening, and federal awards.
- What you can do
- Whetstone MCP exposes four tools backed by Apify actors over official U.S. public-record data. business_search returns Secretary of State business registration (KYB) records across 25 states, and new_business_filings lists newly registered businesses from 10 states within a date window. watchlist_screen checks a name against 12 federal watchlists such as OFAC, BIS and State Department lists, and federal_awards pulls a company's federal contracts, grants and loans from USAspending.gov.
- When to use it
- Use it when an assistant needs quick public-record lookups on companies or individuals: basic KYB checks, monitoring new business registrations, screening names against government watchlists, or reviewing federal contract and grant history. It suits research and due-diligence drafting rather than authoritative verification.
- Requirements
- Runs locally over stdio, typically via npx whetstone-mcp. Requires Node.js and a required APIFY_TOKEN environment variable holding an Apify API token; runs bill to that Apify account under pay-per-result pricing. Network access is needed for the Apify actors.
Installation
In SourceWeft
- Open Whetstone Mcp in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
- Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.
Other MCP clients
Follow the launch instructions in the repository.
README
whetstone-mcp
An MCP server for U.S. public-records data — so AI agents and MCP clients (Claude Desktop, Cursor, etc.) can look up business records, screen names against government watchlists, and pull federal awards directly.
Powered by the Whetstone actors on Apify. All data is official U.S. government public-record data.
Tools
Setup
You need a free Apify API token (apify.com → Settings → API & Integrations). Runs bill to your Apify account under pay-per-result pricing (~$2 per 1,000 result rows; the free tier covers light use).
Claude Desktop
Add to claude_desktop_config.json:
Restart Claude Desktop. The four tools then appear and the agent can call them.
Any MCP client
Run the server over stdio:
Notes & limits
- Heavy queries can be slow. Business search across all 25 states (or filings across all
10) runs synchronously and may approach the 300-second limit. Pass a
statessubset for faster, cheaper runs. - Name-based matching. Watchlist and federal-award results are matched by name and are not identity confirmation — verify a hit against the official source before acting. Nothing here is legal, compliance, or financial advice.
- A free, interactive version of the combined lookup is at whetstonetools.com/company-check, and there's also an n8n community node.

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.

Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.
