Live Microsoft Word editing via MCP — tracked changes, undo, comments, 40+ tools
Overview
A local MCP server that lets an AI assistant read, edit, format and review Microsoft Word documents, including live editing of open files with tracked changes.
- What you can do
- Read and edit saved .docx files: text, find and replace, formatting, styles, tables, page layout, headers and footers, bookmarks, equations and cross-references, plus table-of-contents insertion and layout diagnostics on any platform without Word installed. Live-edit a document open in Word on Windows or macOS: text, formatting, tables, revisions and comments appear in the open file. Manage review: native tracked changes under a configured author name, comments anchored to text, and on Windows threaded replies, resolve/unresolve and undo-history inspection. Undo AI actions: per-action Ctrl+Z on Windows, per-operation undo on macOS.
- When to use it
- Useful when an assistant should work directly on Word documents rather than pasting text back and forth: drafting or revising contracts and reports with tracked changes, formatting and layout fixes, adding reviewer comments, or batch-generating and editing .docx files.
- Requirements
- Runs locally as a Python package (Python 3.11+); dependencies install automatically. Live editing needs Microsoft Word installed: Windows 10/11 with COM, or macOS with Word for Mac via JXA. Cross-platform tools work without Word. Optional environment variables MCP_AUTHOR and MCP_AUTHOR_INITIALS set the name and initials on tracked changes and comments; MCP_TRANSPORT, MCP_HOST and MCP_PORT configure transport. Docker mode supports only cross-platform tools.
Installation
In SourceWeft
- Open Word MCP Live in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
- Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.
Other MCP clients
Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

What Sets This Apart
- Live editing — Edit documents while they're open in Word. No save-close-reopen cycle.
- Full undo — Every AI action is a single Ctrl+Z. Made a mistake? Just undo it.
- Native tracked changes — Real Word revisions with your name, not XML hacks.
- Threaded comments — Add, reply, resolve, and delete comments like a human reviewer.
- Layout diagnostics — Detects formatting problems before they become print disasters.
- Equations & cross-references — Insert math formulas and auto-updating references.
- 124 tools — The most comprehensive Word MCP server available.

Two Modes
Both modes work together. The AI picks the right one for the task.
macOS Live Editing (New in v1.5.0)
Live tools now work on macOS via JavaScript for Automation (JXA). Same tool names, same parameters — the server detects your platform and uses the right automation backend.
Configuration
For remote deployment, see RENDER_DEPLOYMENT.md.

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.

Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.
