Overview

AI-generated overview

Remote MCP server that lets an assistant export YouTube comments and transcripts and return download file URLs in JSON, CSV and other formats.

What you can do
  • Download comments from videos, Shorts, live streams, playlists, channels and community posts
  • List and check the status of your downloads
  • Get download files as JSON, CSV, HTML, XLSX, TXT or ZIP
  • Fetch video transcripts and channel details
When to use it
Useful when you want an assistant to pull comment threads or transcripts from YouTube content and hand back a ready-to-use export file, for example for research, moderation review or summarizing a video's discussion.
Requirements
A remote MCP endpoint; no local package or runtime. Authentication is OAuth 2.1 with PKCE by default, or an existing API key supplied in the x-api-key header, created in the provider's API keys dashboard. Network access to the hosted service.
Before you install
Exports consume credits charged by the underlying API, so usage costs money. The x-api-key header is a secret credential. Downloads are created on the provider's service and export files are served from public URLs, so exported comment data leaves your machine.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open YouTube Comments Downloader in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Connect the required credentials. They are stored privately and never shown on public pages.
  3. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/io.github.youtube-comments-downloader%2Fyoutube-comments-downloader-mcp/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

Other MCP clients

Add this to your client's mcpServers config. The client completes OAuth sign-in on first connect.

README

YouTube Comments Downloader MCP

Use YouTube Comments Downloader from an MCP-compatible AI client. The server is a thin adapter over the existing YouTube Comments Downloader API: it does not create a second export system, export storage layer, queue, or file format.

What it can do

  • Download comments from videos, Shorts, live streams, playlists, channels, and community posts.
  • Check and list your downloads.
  • Get the download file in JSON, CSV, HTML, XLSX, TXT, or ZIP format.
  • Get video transcripts.
  • Get channel details.

There is intentionally no search_youtube_comments tool in v1 because the main API does not yet expose a matching endpoint.

Install

Use the public MCP URL:

text
https://api.youtubecommentsdownloader.com/mcp

For Cursor and compatible JSON clients, add:

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "youtube-comments-downloader": {      "type": "http",      "url": "https://api.youtubecommentsdownloader.com/mcp"    }  }}

For Claude Code, add the marketplace and install the plugin:

text
/plugin marketplace add youtube-comments-downloader/youtube-comments-downloader-mcp/plugin install youtube-comments-downloader-mcp@youtube-comments-downloader

For Gemini CLI:

bash
gemini extensions install https://github.com/youtube-comments-downloader/youtube-comments-downloader-mcp

Open the installation configurator for platform-specific steps.

Authentication

OAuth 2.1 with PKCE S256 is the default for clients that support remote MCP authorization. The server also accepts an existing YCD API key in the x-api-key header. API keys are created in the API keys dashboard.

Credits are charged by the existing API, the same as in the app.

Example prompts

  • Download the comments from this YouTube video and give me the JSON file URL.
  • List my latest finished downloads.
  • Check this download and tell me whether it is ready.
  • Get the transcript of this video and summarize it.
  • Get channel details for this YouTube channel.

Maintenance

This repository contains only the installable plugin package. The hosted MCP adapter remains in the main YouTube Comments Downloader application and consumes its existing API, exports, queues, PocketBase, and Redis services. The deployment that serves the endpoint must run the YCD API and have the PocketBase collection created:

bash
cd webbun run migrate:mcp

The collection is server-only. OAuth codes and tokens are stored only as SHA-256 hashes in the single mcp collection. Public export URLs continue to use the existing API route and ID contract.

Publishing checklist

  1. Pin the public repository commit in the xAI marketplace catalog.
  2. Validate the Codex manifest and test the remote OAuth flow with a reviewer account.
  3. Submit the package to each marketplace using the links in the documentation page.
