Convert web pages to clean, LLM-optimized Markdown. No browser needed.
Overview
Local MCP server that fetches web pages over HTTP and converts them into clean, token-efficient Markdown for an assistant.
- What you can do
- Fetch a URL and get back clean Markdown with metadata and a token count
- Convert an HTML string you already have into Markdown
- Return page metadata such as title, author and date alongside the converted text
- When to use it
- Useful when an assistant needs readable page content rather than raw HTML, for example summarizing articles or feeding web text into a context window with fewer tokens. It avoids running a full browser, so it suits lightweight, server-side fetching.
- Requirements
- Runs as a local stdio process, installed via npx from the GitHub package or the published container image. No authentication, environment variables or headers are declared. Network access is needed to fetch pages.
Installation
In SourceWeft
- Open Readdown Mcp in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
- Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.
Other MCP clients
Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

Why readdown?
Most web-fetching MCP servers use @mozilla/readability + turndown (two packages, 65KB).
readdown replaces both in a single 5KB package with better LLM optimization:
- Token-efficient output (fewer tokens = cheaper API calls)
- Built-in token estimation
- Metadata extraction (title, author, date)
- Works server-side with linkedom (no browser DOM needed)

Score
50% of the applicable checks met
How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.
- Reached in the last 30 days25 pts
Keep the endpoint answering the MCP handshake; SourceWeft probes it every 30 days.
- Auth declared10 pts
Declare the credential headers in the registry entry, or keep the endpoint answering the probe so its auth can be classified.
