Overview

AI-generated overview

ExpatsList gives an assistant read-only access to city guides, local business listings, community Q&A and country reference data for expats and newcomers.

What you can do
  • List covered cities and resolve city names to slugs
  • Get recent community activity in a city, grouped by content type
  • Keyword search across businesses, classifieds, blog posts, questions, recommendations and missed-connection posts, filterable by city and type
  • Browse the newest items of one content type in a city, with an optional category filter
  • Fetch a single item by type, city and slug, such as a question with its best answer
  • Look up country reference figures: nomad visa, cost of living, healthcare, tax and safety
When to use it
Useful when someone asks about moving to, living in or visiting a city abroad: finding local services, seeing what residents discuss, or checking visa, cost-of-living, healthcare and tax figures. Also handy for questions about expat or remote-worker life in a specific city.
Requirements
A remote streamable HTTP endpoint at expatslist.org; no package, environment variable or header is declared. No authentication is declared.
Before you install
Results are summaries only; full posts, answers, contact details and complete tables stay on the site, so the assistant should link out rather than present them as complete. Content is community-contributed and may be outdated or inaccurate, and the server tells assistants not to guess prices, ratings or requirements that were not returned. Coverage is limited to the cities listed, and nothing should be inferred for uncovered cities.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Expatslist in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/org.expatslist%2Fmcp/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

list_cities

List covered cities

Lists the cities ExpatsList covers, with the slug every other tool expects. Use it to resolve a city name the user typed, or when the user asks which cities are available. Returns nothing else; it does not search content.

Takes no parameters.

city_pulse

What is happening in a city

Recent community activity in one city: new questions, missed-connection posts, recommendations, classifieds, blog posts and businesses, grouped by type with up to five summaries each and a link to the full section. Use it for "what are people talking about in X" or "what is new in X". Limitation: only the last 1 to 90 days, and only cities from list_cities.

search_expatslist

Search ExpatsList

Keyword search across business listings, classifieds, blog posts, questions, recommendations and missed-connection posts, optionally limited to one city and one content type. Use it when the user names a thing to find (a dentist, a coworking space, a topic). Returns short summaries with links; full details are on the linked page. Limitation: keyword match, not semantic; at most 10 results.

browse

Browse newest content of one type

Newest items of one content type in one city: questions, missed-connection posts (human_connection), recommendations, classifieds, blog posts or businesses. Optional category filter. For businesses with no category it returns the category list with counts instead of items. Use it for "latest questions in X", "any missed connections in X", "show me restaurants in X". Limitation: at most 10 items per call.

get_item

Get one item

One item by type, city and slug: a question with its best answer and the count of further answers, a missed-connection post, a recommendation, a classified, a blog post or a business listing. Use it after a search or browse result when the user wants more on one item. Limitation: text is a summary of up to about 600 characters; contact details are never included and are on the linked page.
