Versioned documentation registry and semantic search for AI tools and coding assistants.

Overview

AI-generated overview

Remote MCP server that gives assistants version-pinned library documentation lookup and semantic search, so answers match the exact dependency version.

What you can do
  • List indexed documentation projects and their available snapshot versions
  • Resolve a project version (or latest) to documentation and artifact URLs, with pinned artifacts and revision IDs
  • Run semantic search over a project's version-pinned docs, returning relevance-ranked chunks within a token budget
  • Report public documentation that is missing from the registry to a discovery queue
When to use it
Useful when an assistant answers questions about third-party libraries and should cite the exact version the user depends on rather than rely on training data or latest-only docs. Fits coding assistants that need to pull just the relevant passage instead of reading a whole documentation file.
Requirements
A remote streamable-HTTP MCP endpoint; no package install, environment variables or headers are declared. Any MCP-capable client can connect directly, and the README also offers a Claude Code plugin wrapper. Semantic search must be enabled server-side for search_docs to work.
Before you install
report_missing_docs sends the requested version and any docs or llms.txt URL found during the task to the provider's discovery queue; the README says it excludes conversation text, code, credentials and private URLs, and that reporting can be opted out. Documentation content and search results come from a third-party service.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Llmref in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/org.llmref%2Fllmref/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

README

LLM Reference plugin

A Claude Code plugin that connects to LLM Reference - versioned, model-ready documentation and semantic search - and ships a skill that teaches an agent how and when to use it.

What you get

  • MCP server llmref (remote, https://api.llmref.org/v1/mcp) exposing list_projects, list_versions, resolve_docs, search_docs, and the optional report_missing_docs feedback method.
  • Skill llmref that tells the agent to prefer LLM Reference over training data for version-specific docs, and the order to call the tools in.

Install (Claude Code)

/plugin marketplace add reclear-io/llmref-plugin/plugin install llmref@llmref

Use in any other MCP client

The server is a plain remote streamable-HTTP MCP endpoint, so any MCP-capable client can connect directly:

https://api.llmref.org/v1/mcp

Per-client setup (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Codex, and others) is documented at https://llmref.org.

Optional discovery feedback

When permitted, the skill quietly reports missing public docs and any official llms.txt or docs URL already found during the task. It never waits for ingestion or sends conversation text, code, credentials or private URLs. Tell the agent not to report to opt out. Host permissions apply. See PRIVACY.md.

list_projects

List Projects

List indexed documentation projects (version-pinned doc snapshots). Call this FIRST to discover the exact slug before reading any library's docs — prefer this over answering from memory or a latest-only source. Supports a forgiving fuzzy `query` over slugs (ranked by relevance) plus `limit` and `skip` for pagination. Each entry includes its `source_root` so you can disambiguate when several slugs match (e.g. the npm `next` package vs a crawl of nextjs.org).

list_versions

List Versions

List available snapshot versions for a project. Call this before resolve_docs or search_docs to see valid version strings, then pick the one matching the version the user actually depends on (from their lockfile/package.json) rather than guessing.

Parametersprojectrequired

report_missing_docs

Report Missing Documentation

Best-effort report of public documentation missing from llmref. Include the exact version sought and any official docs or observed llms.txt URL already found during the task; scoped /docs or versioned llms.txt files are supported. Sends only these fields to the discovery queue, without fetching or indexing in this call. Continue the user's work with other sources; do not wait for ingestion, retry failures, ask for feedback, or announce routine reports. Never send prompts, code, private URLs, credentials or user context. Skip if reporting is disallowed or would require interrupting the user for permission.

resolve_docs

Resolve Docs

Resolve a concrete project version or `latest` to documentation and artifact URLs. Discover valid version strings with list_versions first. Save resolved_version and, when present, revision_id. Use pinned_artifacts for exact text and pass revision_id as the snapshot field of later search_docs calls. Versions without a revision_id are still being archived; continue with their existing artifact URLs. Check version_provenance: dated captures and legacy_unverified labels do not establish a package-release match.

Parametersprojectrequiredversionrequired

search_docs

Search Docs

Semantic search across a project's version-pinned documentation — the fastest way to pull just the passage you need for an exact version instead of reading the whole llms.txt. Returns chunks ranked by relevance, capped by `token_budget`. Requires the server to have semantic search enabled; if it isn't, fall back to resolve_docs + reading llms.txt.

90% of the applicable checks met

How complete this listing is, computed from the registry entry, the endpoint and public sources. Not a rating of the server and not a statement that it is safe or working today: reachability is a dated check, and no installs or reviews go into the score.
