Overview

AI-generated overview

Hosted MarkItDown service that lets an assistant convert PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, HTML and text files into Markdown.

What you can do
  • Convert a single document to Markdown and get the result back
  • Supply the file as base64 content or as a download link, with its filename
  • Supported types are chosen by extension: .pdf, .docx, .pptx, .xlsx, .html, .htm and .txt
  • Receive the Markdown plus metadata such as the filename
When to use it
Useful when an assistant needs to read or reuse the content of office documents, PDFs or HTML pages as clean Markdown, for example to summarize, quote or restructure them, without running a converter locally.
Requirements
A remote endpoint at api.pagespool.com over streamable HTTP. An API key sent in the X-API-Key header, or OAuth sign-in instead. Files are limited to 8 MB and must be passed as base64 content or a download link.
Before you install
Documents are uploaded to a third-party hosted service, so avoid sending confidential or regulated files. The API key is a secret and should be kept out of shared logs. Passing a download link means the service fetches that URL.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open MarkItDown by pagespool in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/com.pagespool%2Fmarkitdown/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

Convert a document to Markdown with MarkItDown

Convert a document up to 8 MB to Markdown with MarkItDown and return it. Pass the file as base64 in `content_base64`, or as a download link in `file`, and its name in `filename`. The extension decides the type: .pdf, .docx, .pptx, .xlsx, .html, .htm or .txt. Returns `markdown` and `meta` (`filename`, `length` in characters). PDFs come back as the text of their text layer, without headings and without OCR. Works without an API key at the anonymous rate limit. Credits: 1 per call.
