Redmine

io.github.aarondpnv2.13.0Updated Oct 4, 2026

Work with Redmine issues, projects, time entries, wiki pages and more. Read-only by default.

Overview

AI-generated overview

Lets an assistant read and, if enabled, manage Redmine issues, projects, time entries and wiki pages through a local MCP server.

What it does
Exposes Redmine project management operations as typed tool calls: listing and viewing issues, projects, time entries and wiki pages, plus logging time. It is read-only by default; create, update and delete tools are only registered when explicitly enabled. Per-group and per-tool allow- and deny-lists let you narrow what the assistant can reach.
When to use it
Worth adding when you track work in a self-hosted or hosted Redmine instance and want an assistant to look up issues, projects, time entries or wiki content without leaving the chat. Enable write tools only if you also want the assistant to create, update or delete records.
Requirements
Runs as a local process over stdio, for example via the published container image or the redmine CLI. Requires the REDMINE_SERVER base URL of your Redmine instance and the REDMINE_API_KEY secret. Network access to that Redmine instance is needed. Desktop only.
Before you install
The server holds a Redmine API key (REDMINE_API_KEY) that carries your account's permissions, so treat it as a credential. Writes are off by default; setting REDMINE_MCP_ENABLE_WRITES to true registers create, update and delete tools that can change or remove Redmine data. Review allow- and deny-lists before enabling writes.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Redmine in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.

Other MCP clients

Follow the launch instructions in the repository.

Using with AI Agents

redmine-cli ships an Agent Skill (the open SKILL.md standard, supported by 35+ agents) and a built-in MCP server. Both are vendor-neutral - pick the one-liner that matches your tool:

ToolOne-line install
Any agent (skill)npx skills add aarondpn/redmine-cli
Any MCP hostredmine mcp serve (then add to host config)
Docker (MCP only)docker run -i --rm -e REDMINE_SERVER -e REDMINE_API_KEY ghcr.io/aarondpn/redmine-mcp
Claude Code/plugin marketplace add aarondpn/redmine-cli then /plugin install redmine
Codex CLIcodex plugin marketplace add aarondpn/redmine-cli then /plugins (install Redmine from the added marketplace)
Gemini CLIgemini extensions install https://github.com/aarondpn/redmine-cli

The skill teaches the agent the non-obvious parts of the CLI (output formats, name resolution, pagination, common workflows). The MCP server exposes the same operations as typed tool calls, read-only by default, with per-group / per-tool allow- and deny-lists.

Full configuration, host-specific snippets (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Zed, VS Code), and write-tool gating: see the AI Agent Integration guide.

Development

Local E2E testing against a real Redmine instance (Docker, supported on Redmine 4.2, 5.1, 6.1, 7.0): see e2e/README.md.
