Overview

AI-generated overview

Hosted MCP server that lets an assistant search OpenAlex scholarly works, authors, institutions, citations and references.

What you can do
  • Search and retrieve scholarly works, including abstracts, by keyword or identifier
  • Look up an author or institution and search across authors and institutions
  • Trace citation and reference links between works
  • Return compact JSON results suitable for summarizing research
When to use it
Useful when an assistant needs to look up academic literature, check who cited a paper, or find authors and institutions behind research, without building an OpenAlex integration yourself.
Requirements
Remote streamable HTTP endpoint hosted on Apify; no local package. Requires an Apify API token sent as an Authorization bearer header. An Apify account with billing is needed, and stdio-only clients need a proxy such as mcp-remote. An OpenAlex API key is optional for higher rate limits.
Before you install
Each successful tool call costs $0.015 billed through your Apify account, plus normal Apify Standby usage; failed calls and initialize/tools/list are not charged. The Apify token is a paid-account credential, and scoped tokens need Full access run mode. All tools are read-only, but queries are sent to Apify and OpenAlex.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open OpenAlex MCP Server in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Connect Authorization token credentials. They are stored privately and never shown on public pages.
  3. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/io.github.agenticsolutions-hq%2Fopenalex-mcp/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows
