Overview
Local MCP server that queries the public OpenAlex API so an assistant can look up scholarly works, authors, and citation metadata.
- What you can do
- Search scholarly works by query and retrieve a single work by identifier
- Search authors and retrieve a single author profile
- Return metadata such as DOI, publication year, citation counts, open access links, venues, authors, and topics
- When to use it
- Useful when you want an assistant to find research papers, check citation counts, or look up author and venue details from OpenAlex without leaving the chat. Suited to literature reviews and quick bibliographic checks.
- Requirements
- Runs as a local process via the npm package @mrfentmen/openalex-mcp over stdio; the README shows installing dependencies, building, and running the compiled entry point, so Node.js is needed. No authentication, environment variables, or headers are declared; network access to the public OpenAlex API is implied.
Installation
In SourceWeft
- Open Openalex Mcp in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
- Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.
Desktop only via STDIO. STDIO servers start a local process, so they need the SourceWeft desktop host.
