Overview

AI-generated overview

Connects an assistant to Descript so it can find, import, edit, publish and export video and audio projects in natural language.

What you can do
  • Search and browse a Drive: find projects, folders, media, layout packs and transcript matches, and inspect project compositions and metadata
  • Import media from URLs, direct file uploads or a connected Google Drive
  • Edit projects with Descript's AI co-editor using natural-language prompts such as trimming, captions and filler-word removal
  • Publish a composition as a shareable link with exported video or audio
  • Export a project's transcript or a Premiere Pro / DaVinci Resolve timeline
  • Track, wait for and cancel asynchronous jobs and report upload progress
When to use it
Useful when you want an assistant to work inside Descript on real projects: turning raw media into a new project, applying text-style edits to a video or podcast, or producing shareable links, transcripts and edit timelines without switching apps.
Requirements
A Descript account and an MCP-capable client. The server is a remote HTTP endpoint authenticated with OAuth: on first connection you sign in to Descript and choose which Drive the agent may access. Switching Drives later requires logging out of Descript on the web and reconnecting.
Before you install
The agent gets access to a whole Descript Drive, so pick the Drive deliberately. Editing, importing and publishing change real projects, and publishing creates shareable links and exported files; async jobs should be awaited before further edits. Install only from official listings and do not add a second hand-made Descript server alongside it, since duplicate connections cause conflicting sessions.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Descript in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Connect the required credentials. They are stored privately and never shown on public pages.
  3. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/io.github.descriptinc%2Fdescript/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

Other MCP clients

Add this to your client's mcpServers config. The client completes OAuth sign-in on first connect.

README

Descript MCP

Edit video and audio by editing text. Import media, create projects, and use AI to edit — all from your agent.

What's included

MCP Server

Connects to the Descript API over MCP, giving agents access to:

  • Discover — search_drive finds projects, folders, media, layout packs, and transcript matches across the connected Drive; list_projects / get_project inspect projects and their compositions, media, and metadata; list_folders / get_drive_info browse folders and inspect a Drive
  • Import — import_media (via URL or direct file upload), import_drive_media (from a connected Google Drive), file_upload_ui (direct file uploads)
  • Edit — prompt_project_agent edits with Underlord, our AI co-editor, using natural language (trim, add captions, remove filler words, and so much more)
  • Publish — publish_project publishes a composition as a shareable link and exported video or audio
  • Export — export_transcript exports a project's transcript; export_timeline exports a Premiere Pro / DaVinci Resolve timeline
  • Jobs — wait_for_job / list_jobs / cancel_job track and manage async jobs; report_upload_status reports direct-upload progress

Rules / context

Bundles a descript-workflows rule with best practices for working with the Descript tools: find items with search_drive (or paginate projects with list_projects) before editing, inspect with get_project, pass media URLs to import_media as-is, use prompt_project_agent for natural-language edits, and always follow the async tools (import_media, prompt_project_agent, publish_project) with wait_for_job.

The rule is Cursor-format (rules/descript-workflows.mdc). Antigravity reads the same guidance from AGENTS.md at the repo root. Claude Code has no rules concept, so it relies on the bundled skills for the same workflows.

Skills

  • create-video — Create a new project from media files or URLs
  • edit-project — Edit an existing project using AI-powered natural language
  • publish-project — Publish a composition to create a shareable link and exported video or audio file
  • export-transcript — Export a project's transcript as a downloadable file
  • export-timeline — Export a project's timeline for Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve

Setup

The Descript MCP authenticates with OAuth — no API token. On first connection you sign in to Descript and pick the Drive the agent can access. To switch Drives later, log out of Descript on the web and reconnect.

Install from an official marketplace listing only: let it register the server, sign in with OAuth, pick a Drive, then confirm the connection with get_drive_info. Don't also add a second, custom Descript MCP server by hand — a duplicate connection means conflicting sessions.

Every MCP client points at the same remote server:

https://api.descript.com/v2/mcp

Quick-install steps differ by harness.

Cursor

This repo is a Cursor plugin, so installing it brings the MCP server, the descript-workflows rule, and the skills together.

  1. Add this plugin to Cursor (from the plugin marketplace, or by pointing Cursor at this repository).
  2. Cursor registers the descript MCP server, rule, and skills.
  3. When the server first connects, sign in to Descript and choose a Drive.

One-click alternative: open Settings → Descript MCP in the Descript app and use the Cursor connect button, or install the MCP server with a deep link:

cursor://anysphere.cursor-deeplink/mcp/install?name=Descript&config=eyJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL2FwaS5kZXNjcmlwdC5jb20vdjIvbWNwIn0=

The deep link installs only the MCP server; the rule and skills come from the plugin.

Claude Code

This repo is also a Claude Code plugin, so installing it brings the MCP server and the skills together. Add the repo as a marketplace, then install the plugin:

/plugin marketplace add descriptinc/descript-mcp/plugin install descript@descript

Claude Code registers the descript MCP server and auto-discovers the skills. When the server first connects, sign in to Descript and choose a Drive.

If you only want the server without the skills, add it on its own:

claude mcp add --transport http descript https://api.descript.com/v2/mcp

The descript-workflows rule is Cursor-format and does not load in Claude Code; the same guidance is carried by the bundled skills.

Antigravity

Google's Antigravity reads project context straight from this repo — no install step. Open the repo as your Antigravity workspace and it picks up the AGENTS.md workflow guidance at the root. Antigravity also reads the same SKILL.md format as Claude Code, so the bundled skills apply there too.

The MCP server is added separately, in Antigravity's own config. Antigravity does not reliably load an MCP server from a repo-committed file — project-local mcpServers are currently discovered but ignored, so the server has to live in the user-level config, added through the UI:

  1. In the Agent panel, open the ... (Additional Options) menu → MCP Servers → Manage MCP Servers → View raw config.

  2. Add the descript server under mcpServers. Antigravity uses the serverUrl key for remote HTTP servers (not url):

    json
    {  "mcpServers": {    "descript": {      "serverUrl": "https://api.descript.com/v2/mcp"    }  }}
  3. Save, then reconnect. When the server first connects, sign in to Descript and choose a Drive.

The raw config file lives under your home directory (~/.gemini/config/mcp_config.json on recent builds; older builds used ~/.gemini/antigravity/mcp_config.json) — using View raw config avoids depending on the exact path.

Codex

This repo is a Codex plugin marketplace (.agents/plugins/marketplace.json) whose single plugin, descript, is the repo root. Installing it brings the descript MCP server (from mcp.json) and the skills together.

From GitHub, add the marketplace, then install the plugin:

codex plugin marketplace add descriptinc/descript-mcp --ref maincodex plugin add descript@descript

From a local checkout, add the marketplace by its absolute path, then install the same way:

codex plugin marketplace add /absolute/path/to/checkoutcodex plugin add descript@descript

To update a GitHub-sourced install, refresh the marketplace's Git snapshot:

codex plugin marketplace upgrade descript

Running git pull in a local checkout changes the files on disk but does not by itself refresh the plugin copy Codex has installed; reinstall the plugin after updating the checkout.

The plugin authenticates on install: sign in to Descript and choose the Drive the agent can access. To switch Drives later, log out of Descript on the web and reconnect.

If you only want the tools without the skills, add just the bare MCP server pointed at https://api.descript.com/v2/mcp with OAuth. Install the complete plugin or add the bare server — not both. A second, hand-added Descript server alongside the plugin's means two connections and conflicting sessions.

Other MCP clients

Any other MCP client works by adding the remote server on its own — a remote (HTTP) server pointed at https://api.descript.com/v2/mcp with OAuth. See Connect Descript to any AI assistant for the general flow. The descript-workflows rule and the skills in this repo are harness-specific bundle content and don't travel with a bare MCP connection.

Claude and ChatGPT

Descript ships official connectors in both directories — no server URL needed:

Official sources

Only the published server endpoint (https://api.descript.com/v2/mcp) and Descript's official marketplace listings — the ChatGPT app, the Claude connector, and the Cursor plugin linked above — are official. Any other listing, connector, or fork is not affiliated with or endorsed by Descript.

Requirements

  • A Descript account
  • An agent harness with MCP support

Development

npm installnpm run check # lint, format check, and plugin validationnpm run fmt # apply formatting

CI runs the same checks on every pull request. npm run validate covers the Cursor manifest, the portable / OpenAI manifest and skill dependencies, and MCP endpoint consistency; npm test runs the validator's regression tests; npm run check runs lint, format checks, tests, and validation.

Maintainers: see RELEASE.md for how the OpenAI (ChatGPT) listing is refreshed from this repo and how direct installs ship, including the package-identity rules.
