Overview

AI-generated overview

Hosted MCP server for Adafruit IO that lets an assistant read IoT feeds, data points, groups and dashboards, and publish a value or create a feed.

What you can do
  • Inspect the account: user profile, data rate limit, activity log.
  • Browse feeds: list, get details, last value and stored point counts.
  • Query feed data: recent points, single points by id, and aggregated chart series by resolution and time range.
  • Explore groups and dashboards, including dashboard blocks and their feeds.
  • Write: publish one data point to a feed, or create a new empty feed.
When to use it
Useful when you want to ask questions about sensor or device data held in Adafruit IO, summarize trends over a time window, or push a single value to a feed that drives hardware. It suits hobbyist and small IoT setups rather than bulk data pipelines.
Requirements
Remote endpoint reached over streamable HTTP; no local install. Sign-in is by OAuth, and the login page asks for your Adafruit IO credentials. Add only the server URL to the client config, not an API key or Authorization header. A free tier allows 50 tool calls per month; paid plans raise the limit.
Before you install
Publishing a data point can drive real devices subscribed to the feed (relays, motors, lights, heaters, locks) and cannot be undone from here; only publish values the user asked for. Write tools change Adafruit IO data. The service meters tool calls and offers paid plans with payment links, so upgrades involve spending money. Your Adafruit IO credentials are entered on the hosted login page.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Adafruit IO MCP by usefulapi in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/io.usefulapi%2Fadafruit-io/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

Adafruit IO MCP by usefulapi

Use Adafruit IO from Claude, Cursor, or any MCP client — IoT feeds, feed data and charts, groups, dashboards and activity, plus single data-point publishes. Hosted, no local install: connect with your own Adafruit IO credentials.

Live endpoint: https://adafruit-io.usefulapi.io/mcp · Homepage: https://usefulapi.io/adafruit-io

Connect

  • Claude (claude.ai, Desktop): open Customize → Connectors, click + Add → Add custom connector, and paste https://adafruit-io.usefulapi.io/mcp.
  • Claude Code: claude mcp add --transport http adafruit-io https://adafruit-io.usefulapi.io/mcp, then run /mcp to log in.
  • VS Code: Add to VS Code.
  • Cursor and other clients: add the URL as a remote MCP server:
json
{  "mcpServers": {    "adafruit-io": {      "url": "https://adafruit-io.usefulapi.io/mcp"    }  }}

Add only the URL. Do not add an Authorization header or an API key to the client config: the server signs you in with OAuth, and the login page asks for your Adafruit IO credentials.

Tools

adafruitio_get_user

Get user

The Adafruit IO account this key belongs to: id, name, username, time zone, created/updated times, plus the data rate limit when reported. GET /api/v2/user.

Takes no parameters.

adafruitio_get_throttle

Get data rate limit

The account's data rate limit (data-record modifications per minute: 30 on free accounts, 60 on Plus) and the current active data rate. Check it before publishing many points. GET /api/v2/{username}/throttle.

Takes no parameters.

adafruitio_list_feeds

List feeds

List all of the account's feeds with key, name, description, unit, visibility, enabled flag, last value and last update. GET /feeds.

Takes no parameters.

adafruitio_get_feed

Get feed

One feed by key: name, description, unit, visibility, last value, status settings and the groups it belongs to. GET /feeds/{feed_key}.

Parametersfeed_keyrequired

adafruitio_get_feed_details

Get feed details

A feed with its details block: first and last data point and the number of stored points. GET /feeds/{feed_key}/details.

Parametersfeed_keyrequired

adafruitio_list_feed_data

List feed data

Data points of a feed (max 1000 per call). Newest first, except that with start_time the API returns the oldest page after that time. Filter by time range and limit; to read further back call again with the reply's next_page_args (the same filters plus `before`). GET /feeds/{feed_key}/data.

Parameterslimitbeforeincludeend_timefeed_keyrequiredstart_time

adafruitio_get_last_data

Get latest data point

The most recent data point of a feed (value, location, created_at). GET /feeds/{feed_key}/data/last.

Parametersincludefeed_keyrequired

adafruitio_get_data_point

Get data point

One stored data point of a feed by its id. GET /feeds/{feed_key}/data/{id}.

Parametersdata_idrequiredfeed_keyrequired

adafruitio_get_feed_chart

Get feed chart data

Aggregated chart data for a feed: values sliced by `resolution` minutes over the last `hours` (or a start/end range), using avg, sum, min, max, val or val_count. Good for trends without downloading every point. GET /feeds/{feed_key}/data/chart.

Parametersfieldhoursend_timefeed_keyrequiredresolutionstart_time

adafruitio_list_groups

List groups

List the account's groups (named sets of feeds) with their feeds. GET /groups.

Takes no parameters.

adafruitio_get_group

Get group

One group by key with its feeds. GET /groups/{group_key}.

Parametersgroup_keyrequired

adafruitio_list_dashboards

List dashboards

List the account's dashboards with key, name, description and visibility. GET /dashboards.

Takes no parameters.

adafruitio_get_dashboard

Get dashboard

One dashboard by key. GET /dashboards/{dashboard_key}.

Parametersdashboard_keyrequired

adafruitio_list_blocks

List dashboard blocks

The blocks (widgets: gauges, toggles, charts, sliders...) of a dashboard with their feeds, position and properties. Integration secrets in properties are removed. GET /dashboards/{dashboard_key}/blocks.

Parametersdashboard_keyrequired

adafruitio_list_activities

List activity log

The account's activity log (feed/data/dashboard changes), optionally within a time range. GET /activities.

Parameterslimitend_timestart_time

adafruitio_publish_data_point

Publish data point

WRITE: publish one data point (a value) to a feed. This can drive REAL DEVICES: anything subscribed to the feed (relays, motors, lights, heaters, locks, dashboard toggles) will receive and may act on the value, and it cannot be undone from here. Only publish a value the user has asked for. Counts against the account's data rate limit (30 per minute on free accounts, 60 on Plus). POST /feeds/{feed_key}/data.

Parameterselelatlonvaluerequiredfeed_keyrequired

adafruitio_create_feed

Create feed

WRITE: create a new, empty feed (private by default), optionally inside an existing group. Adds a feed only; it does not change or delete anything existing, and fails if the name is taken. POST /feeds.
