Recognize breakthrough moments, design decisions, and durable lessons worth preserving. Distill only high-signal knowledge that should remain useful after the session ends.

AI-generated overview

Guides an agent to recognize and save durable insights from a session as structured memories via the nmem CLI.

What it does
This skill provides instructions for spotting high-signal knowledge produced during a conversation, such as debugging breakthroughs, design decisions with rationale, research conclusions, and plans future sessions must resume. It tells the agent to save these proactively using the nmem command-line tool, with options for title, importance, source, and unit type, and to update an existing memory rather than duplicate it when new information refines it. It also sets a quality bar: memories should be atomic, actionable, and understandable without the original conversation.
When to use it
Use it when a session yields a durable fact, preference, decision, plan, procedure, learning, event, or important context that should remain useful after the session ends. It is meant for substantial work where a takeaway is worth preserving, not for routine fixes, unstable work in progress, or generic Q&A.
Requirements
The nmem command-line tool must be available in the environment. The skill ships no scripts; it is instructions only.

Distill Memory

Proactive Save

Save proactively when the conversation produces a durable fact, preference, decision, plan, procedure, learning, event, or important context. Do not wait to be asked.

Good Candidates

  • a debugging breakthrough
  • a design decision with rationale
  • a research conclusion
  • an unexpected lesson or preventive measure
  • plans that future sessions will need to resume

Skip routine fixes, work in progress without a stable takeaway, and generic Q&A.

Tool Usage

Create memories with nmem:

bash
nmem --json m add "Insight with enough context to stand on its own" \ -t "Searchable title" \ -i 0.8 \ -s droid

Add --unit-type fact|preference|decision|plan|procedure|learning|context|event when the type is clear.

If the same decision or workflow already exists and the new information refines it, update the memory instead of duplicating it:

bash
nmem m update <id> -t "Updated title"

Quality Bar

  • Atomic
  • Actionable
  • Understandable without the original conversation
  • Focused on the outcome, not the chat transcript
  • Explicitly review whether one durable memory should be added or updated at the end of substantial work
