Overview

AI-generated overview

Fetches YouTube captions for an AI assistant, returning transcripts with timestamps, title, channel and language, plus subtitle exports.

What you can do
  • Fetch a video's caption transcript with timed segments, title, channel and language
  • Check which caption and subtitle languages a video offers before fetching
  • Export transcripts as plain text, timestamped text, SRT or WebVTT
  • Accept watch links, Shorts, youtu.be, embed links or a bare video ID
When to use it
Useful when you want an assistant to summarize a YouTube video, locate a quote with timestamps, turn a lecture into notes, or export subtitles in a specific language.
Requirements
Local mode runs via npx and needs Node.js 18 or later, with no API key or account. The remote endpoint at tubetotranscript.com requires a bearer API key in the Authorization header, obtained from a free signup. Network access to YouTube captions is needed.
Before you install
The remote endpoint requires an API key sent as an Authorization bearer header, and requests then run on TubeToTranscript's servers rather than your machine. Transcript fetches are metered against a request allowance, while video info lookups are free. Only existing captions are read, so videos without captions fail, and caption text may contain recognition errors.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open TubeToTranscript in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Connect Authorization token credentials. They are stored privately and never shown on public pages.
  3. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/io.github.TubeToTranscript%2Ftubetotranscript/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

TubeToTranscript MCP Server: YouTube Transcripts for Claude, Cursor & AI Agents

By TubeToTranscript, the free YouTube transcript generator. Website · API docs · Remote MCP endpoint · npm · Source

tubetotranscript-mcp is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that lets AI assistants read YouTube videos. Ask Claude, Cursor, or any MCP client to summarize a video, find a quote, or turn a lecture into notes, and it fetches the video's captions itself, with timestamps, title, channel, and language.

  • Free, no API key, no account. Runs on your computer and reads the captions YouTube already has.
  • Works with any video that has captions: watch links, Shorts, youtu.be links, embeds, or a bare video ID.
  • Every caption language the video offers, including auto-generated tracks.
  • Exports plain text, text with timestamps, SRT, and WebVTT subtitles.

Quick start

Point your MCP client at the package with npx. Nothing to install globally.

Claude Desktop

Add to claude_desktop_config.json (macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/, Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\):

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "tubetotranscript": {      "command": "npx",      "args": ["-y", "tubetotranscript-mcp"]    }  }}

Cursor

Add to .cursor/mcp.json:

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "tubetotranscript": {      "command": "npx",      "args": ["-y", "tubetotranscript-mcp"]    }  }}

Restart the client afterwards so it picks up the new server.

Claude Code

bash
claude mcp add tubetotranscript -- npx -y tubetotranscript-mcp

What you can ask

Once connected, just paste a YouTube link into the chat:

  • "Summarize this video in five bullet points: https://youtu.be/…"
  • "When does the speaker talk about pricing? Give me the timestamps."
  • "Turn this lecture into study notes and ten flashcards."
  • "Which caption languages does this video have?"
  • "Export the Spanish captions as an SRT file."

Clients that take a remote URL, such as Cursor:

Without an AI client

The same transcripts are available on the web at TubeToTranscript, free and without signing up:

Requirements & limitations

  • Node.js 18 or later (uses the built-in fetch).
  • Reads only captions that YouTube already exposes. Videos with captions turned off return an error; this server does no speech-to-text of its own.
  • Caption text can contain recognition errors. Check names, figures, and quotes against the video.
