Overview

AI-generated overview

Hosted MCP server that lets an assistant fetch YouTube transcripts with timestamps, search transcript history, and delete saved records.

What you can do
  • Create or fetch a transcript for a YouTube URL or video ID, choosing language, auto or manual captions, and timestamp/paragraph/word formatting
  • Retrieve a full transcript by video ID, with optional language, source and timestamp filters
  • List and search your transcript history with pagination, status and language filters
  • Check account stats such as credits, transcript count, plan and rate limit
  • Delete transcript records by record IDs or by video ID
When to use it
Useful when you want an assistant to read, quote or summarize YouTube video content, or to look up and manage transcripts you have already generated, without writing custom API code.
Requirements
A remote MCP endpoint at mcp.youtubetranscript.dev, added as a remote connector in an MCP client. Authentication is required: OAuth sign-in where the client supports it, otherwise an API key from the youtubetranscript.dev account page sent as an Authorization Bearer header (x-api-token also accepted). An optional local stdio mode needs Node.js and the YTSM_API_KEY environment variable.
Before you install
The API key is a per-user credential; keep it in the client header or the YTSM_API_KEY variable and out of server environment settings. Transcripts are stored in your account and the delete_transcript tool permanently removes records. Usage is metered by credits and plan, so heavy transcription may consume paid quota. Transcript requests and account data go to the third-party youtubetranscript.dev service.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open YouTube Transcript MCP in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Connect the required credentials. They are stored privately and never shown on public pages.
  3. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/io.github.Youtube-Transcript-Dev%2Fyoutube-transcript-mcp/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

Other MCP clients

Add this to your client's mcpServers config. The client completes OAuth sign-in on first connect.

Why This MCP Server?

Connect Claude, Cursor, Windsurf, or any MCP client to YouTubeTranscript.dev — no custom code. Your AI assistant gets tools to extract transcripts, list history, and manage content at scale.

  • ⚡ Fast caption extraction — Manual or auto captions, returns in seconds
  • 📚 Transcript history — List, search, and paginate your transcripts
  • 🎯 Full control — Get stats, delete transcripts, fetch by video ID
  • 🔌 One config — Works with Claude, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code, Cline
  • 🔒 User-owned keys — API key per connection, no server-side secrets

→ Get your free API key

Quick Start

Remote MCP URL: https://mcp.youtubetranscript.dev

Claude, Cursor, and VS Code can add this as a remote MCP connector. ChatGPT users must enable Developer mode and create a custom app with this URL; availability depends on the workspace plan. OAuth-capable clients sign in once, so no API key is needed in the chat.

ClientOne-click
ClaudeAdd custom connector
ChatGPTDeveloper mode / custom MCP app setup or Custom GPT
CursorInstall
VS CodeInstall
Claude Codeclaude mcp add --transport http youtubetranscript https://mcp.youtubetranscript.dev
Grokgrok mcp add --transport http youtubetranscript https://mcp.youtubetranscript.dev

Full walkthrough: youtubetranscript.dev/resources/mcp-server

API key clients (if the tool has no OAuth): send Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY. x-api-token still works. Get a key from the account page.

Run locally (optional): npm install && npm run build && npm run start:http — then connect to http://localhost:8080.

Cline

Add to your Cline MCP config (format may vary by Cline version):

json
{  "youtubetranscript": {    "url": "https://mcp.youtubetranscript.dev",    "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" }  }}

Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your API key from youtubetranscript.dev/dashboard/account.

Configuration

Server Environment (for deployment)

VariableDescriptionDefault
YTSM_BASE_URLBase URL of the APIhttps://www.youtubetranscript.dev
MCP_PUBLIC_URLPublic MCP originhttps://mcp.youtubetranscript.dev
YTSM_TIMEOUT_MSRequest timeout in ms30000
PORTHTTP server port8080
DEBUGEnable debug loggingfalse (set true to enable)

Note: HTTP mode uses OAuth where the client supports it, including compatible Claude, Cursor, VS Code, and Grok clients. ChatGPT requires Developer mode and a custom MCP app. API-key clients can send Authorization: Bearer / x-api-token from the client. Do not put user keys in server env. For stdio mode, set YTSM_API_KEY. Always set YTSM_BASE_URL to https://www.youtubetranscript.dev — the apex host 301s and breaks POST/auth.

Deployment (Optional)

For production, deploy to a service that supports long-lived connections (e.g. Cloud Run, Railway, Fly.io). Avoid serverless (Vercel, Lambda) for MCP — timeouts and concurrency limits cause issues.

bash
docker build -f Dockerfile.cloudrun -t gcr.io/YOUR_PROJECT/youtube-transcript-mcp .docker push gcr.io/YOUR_PROJECT/youtube-transcript-mcpgcloud run deploy youtube-transcript-mcp --image gcr.io/YOUR_PROJECT/youtube-transcript-mcp ...

Stdio (Alternative)

Run as a subprocess instead of HTTP. Required: set YTSM_API_KEY in env (API key is not passed per-request for stdio).

json
{  "mcpServers": {    "youtubetranscript": {      "command": "node",      "args": ["dist/index.js"],      "env": { "YTSM_API_KEY": "YOUR_API_KEY" }    }  }}

Run from the project directory after npm run build. For globally installed package, use the path to dist/index.js in the package.

Development

bash
npm installnpm run buildnpm testnpm run start:http # Local HTTP server (port 8080)

Quick test all tools (requires YTSM_API_KEY in env):

bash
npm install && npm run buildexport YTSM_API_KEY=your_key   # bash/mac$env:YTSM_API_KEY="your_key"   # PowerShellnpm run test:all

See QUICK_TEST.md for full testing instructions.
