Overview

AI-generated overview

Hosted MCP server for Gavel that lets an assistant list document workflows and their variables, start workflow sessions, and list a session's generated…

What you can do
  • List the Gavel workflows on the account and read each workflow's variable schema (names, types, labels, options, required flags)
  • Create a new workflow session with pre-filled variables, returning a session ID and a continuation link for any missing answers
  • List the documents produced by a completed session, with name, format, template and download link
  • Check monthly tool-call usage, request a missing feature, and upgrade or cancel the Pro subscription
When to use it
Useful when you generate documents from templated Gavel workflows and want an assistant to look up which workflows and variables exist, start a session with the client details already filled in, and find the resulting files without opening Gavel.
Requirements
Remote streamable HTTP endpoint; no local install. Sign-in is via OAuth, and on first connect you supply your Gavel subdomain and a Gavel API key (Gavel Settings, API Keys). You need a Builder or Admin role and a plan with API access. The free tier allows 50 tool calls per month.
Before you install
You hand over a Gavel API key, which the server stores per user. Creating a session writes data and each call adds another session, so confirm before running it. Document download links require the X-Api-Key header. Upgrade tools return Stripe payment links and can start a paid subscription; cancellation runs to the end of the paid period with no refund for the current period.

Installation

In SourceWeft

  1. Open Gavel MCP by usefulapi in the dashboard and add it to a workspace.
  2. Enable the server for the chats that should use its tools.

Web executable via Streamable HTTP. Remote servers run from the web runtime once configured in a workspace.

Use with an agent

Paste this prompt into Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another agent — or into SourceWeft chat. The agent reads this server's install guide, shows you its publisher, endpoint and sign-in, and adds it to your client once you agree. Keys never go into a command.

Read https://sourceweft.com/mcp/io.usefulapi%2Fgavel/install.md and connect the MCP server it describes to my client. Before changing any config, show me its publisher, endpoint and sign-in method and wait for my OK. Never put an API key in a command or in a file I would commit; ask me where it should come from.

Read the install guide the agent follows

README

Gavel MCP by usefulapi

Use your Gavel account from Claude, Cursor, or any MCP client. List workflows and their variables, create workflow sessions and list the documents of a session. Hosted, no local install: connect with your own credentials.

Live endpoint: https://gavel.usefulapi.io/mcp · Homepage: https://usefulapi.io

Connect

  • Claude (claude.ai, Desktop): open Customize → Connectors, click + Add → Add custom connector, and paste https://gavel.usefulapi.io/mcp.
  • Claude Code: claude mcp add --transport http gavel https://gavel.usefulapi.io/mcp, then run /mcp to log in.
  • VS Code: Add to VS Code.
  • Cursor and other clients: add the URL as a remote MCP server:
json
{  "mcpServers": {    "gavel": {      "url": "https://gavel.usefulapi.io/mcp"    }  }}

Add only the URL. Do not add an Authorization header or an API key to the client config: the server signs you in with OAuth, and the login page asks for your Gavel credentials.

Step-by-step setup, where to find your credentials, and FAQ: https://usefulapi.io/gavel/

On first connect you provide your Gavel subdomain and a Gavel API key (Gavel → Settings → API Keys). You need a Builder or Admin role and a plan with API access. The server validates it and stores it per user. No keys go in config files.

gavel_create_session

Create a workflow session

WRITE: create a new session of a workflow with pre-filled variables. It does not send or sign anything. Each call creates one more session. Returns session_id and a continuation_url. If all variables are given, the URL opens the document download page; else the user answers only the missing questions. Dates: '2024-05-30T'. Date time: ISO 8601. Multi select: array of option labels. Repeating items: array of objects. Use gavel_get_workflow_variables for the names. API: POST /api/documate/v1/interviews/{name}/new.
