AI-generated overview

Updates an existing company record in the Carta CRM, changing only the fields the user specifies.

What it does
This skill performs a partial update of a company record in the Carta CRM. It first resolves the company by ID, domain, or name search, collects the fields to change (name, logo image, or custom field values such as website, location, industry, about, and tags), and then calls the CRM update tool. Only the fields explicitly provided are modified; all other fields are left untouched. It can also repeat the process to apply the same change across multiple companies and reports a summary of what changed.
When to use it
Use it when a user asks to update, edit, or change details of an existing company in the Carta CRM, such as its name, website, or tags. It fits requests phrased as updating company fields or applying the same change to several companies.
Requirements
Requires access to the Carta CRM through the mcpcartacrm_call_tool tool, including the CRM company search, domain lookup, custom field schema, and update operations. No scripts are shipped; it is instructions only.

Overview

Partially update an existing company. Only fields provided are modified — this is a partial update, not a replacement. First resolve the company ID, collect what to change, then call the update tool.

Step 1 — Resolve the company ID

If the user provided a company ID directly, use it and skip to Step 3.

If a domain was given, look it up first:

crm_call_tool({ "name": "crm:fetch_company_by_domain", "arguments": { domain: "<domain>" } })

If a name or keyword was given, search first:

crm_call_tool({ "name": "crm:search_companies", "arguments": { query: "<name>", limit: 10 } })

If multiple companies match, present the list and ask the user to confirm which one to update (show name and ID for each).

Step 2 — Collect what to update

Ask the user what they want to change:

  • name — company name
  • image — company logo URL
  • fields — custom field values keyed by field ID (e.g. website, location, industry, about, tags)

If the user wants to update custom fields but isn't sure of field IDs, fetch the schema first:

crm_call_tool({ "name": "crm:get_company_custom_fields", "arguments": {} })

If the user has already specified what to change in their message, extract it directly without re-asking.

Important: Only include fields that are explicitly being changed. Omit everything else.

Step 3 — Update the company

Call:

crm_call_tool({ "name": "crm:update_company", "arguments": { id: "<company id>", name: "<updated name>", image: "<logo url>", fields: { "<field_id>": "<value>" } }})

Omit any top-level key that is not being updated.

Step 4 — Report result

On success, respond with a summary of what changed:

"Company {name} updated (ID: {id}). Changed: [list of changed fields]"

On error, show the error message and suggest:

  • Verify the company ID is correct — run /search-companies to find it
  • Check that custom field IDs are valid

Updating multiple companies

If the user wants to apply the same change to multiple companies, repeat Steps 1 and 3–4 for each. Summarize at the end:

"Updated N companies: [list of names]"

Send work to your Carta Fund Admin team and track it. Opens a request the team reads, acts on, and replies to — the off-ramp for anything no other Carta skill or command can do. TRIGGER: "ask Carta to", "have Carta do", "send this to my fund admin", "ask my fund admin team", "can Carta do this for me", "check on my request", "did Carta reply", "what requests do I have open", "reply to Carta", "follow up on my request", plus ANY action request (create/change/send/restate/reconcile/split/fix) that no other skill or Carta command covers. NOT FOR: reporting a bug or feature request about this plugin (call fa:create:feedback directly); questions answerable from Carta data (use carta-explore-data); capital call reminders to LPs (that is a Carta command, not a Fund Admin request).
